Walking Tour • May 14-20, 2026

Away from the crowded beaches of the southern Algarve, the significantly quieter Costa Vicentina is a breath of (salty) fresh air, with typical Portuguese villages and a famous long-distance path to follow. The Fishermen's Trail of the Rota Vicentina winds to a spectacular and protected coastal landscape, past craggy rocky outcrops, sand dunes, and imposing beaches with huge waves to the Cabo São Vicente, the most south-westerly tip of Europe, and a useful landmark among sailors for centuries. Overnight stays in family-run hotels and dinner with plain fresh fish, fine wines, and tasty pastries: this is how Portugal is meant to be. At the end, indulge yourself in a luxury stay at a boutique hotel with a spa before you spend your last night in Lisbon.

Route

Details

Day 1 From Lisbon OR Faro airport to Zambujeira
After arrival at the airport, we travel by charter bus in about 2.5 hours to our boutique hotel in or near Zambujeira, a perfect place to recover from jetlag and hectic urban lifestyle

Day 2 From Porto Covo to Almograve
6.5 Miles, 3.5 Hours without breaks
This morning, you start off with a 15-minute taxi transfer to the town of Porto Covo, where you can stroll through the streets and buy some lunch supplies before taking the tiny ferry (not inc.) to the Praia das Furnas, on the other side of the river Mira. There, you will start your first walk along the way-marked footpath "Rota Vicentina" along the protected coastline and dunes.

Day 3 From Almograve OR Cavalheiro to Heredade do Touril
5 - 9.4 Miles, 3 - 5 Hours without breaks
The second stage along the Rota Vicentina takes you from either Almograve or the tiny village of Cavalheiro via the lighthouse at Cape Sardao, enjoying spectacular views from the cliffs on the way back to your hotel. Time to eat your packed lunch while enjoying a drink at the terrace of the village bar in Cavalheiro.

Day 4 From Zambujeria to Azenha do Mar => transfer to Odeceixe
6 Miles, 3.5 Hours without breaks
Today, you will do some lunch shopping in Zambujeira before starting your walk. This stage alternates sandy footpaths through rolling dunes, stony footpaths across rocky shores where storks nest, and dirt roads through an area with intensive horticulture. The renowned Fado singer Amália Rodrigues used to spend her summers in this area, in a villa with an ocean view. At the end of the walk, you can enjoy a drink (or food) at a bar-restaurant in Azenha do Mar before we continue by car to our next hotel, in Odeceixe, another nice village on the border of the provinces Alentejo and Algarve, where we can go out for dinner on your own.

Day 5 Loop walk Odeceixe
5 Miles, 5 Hours without breaks
Today, we take a small break from coastal walking with a circular walk in the region around Odeceixe. The walk begins by heading inland through local farmland and then onto open landscape filled with heather and fragrant shrubbery. You will then loop back round to the coast, following the old ‘Fisherman’s Path’ until you reach the beach at Odeceixe, where we can have lunch (not inc). From here, you have the choice of either spending the rest of the afternoon on the beach or heading back to your accommodation.

Day 6 From Monte Novo to Carrapateira
6 miles, 5 Hours without breaks
After a drive to Aljezur, where we’ll visit the castle and do some basic shopping for lunch, we will be dropped off on the altiplano of Monte Novo, from where we descend in one and a half hours to the surfers’ beach Bordeira. Depending on the tides, we will then cross the entire beach or follow an inland route to the village of Carrapatiera, a charming mix of a fishermen’s and a surfers' village.

Day 7 Loop walk Carrepateira
7.5 Miles, 3 Hours without breaks
After breakfast, we continue our exploration of the Costa Vicentina with an easy but scenic loop walk along the shores of the Carrapateira peninsula, between the sandy beaches of Borderia and Praia do Amado. Don’t forget to take your swimming wear with you! Before we return to the hotel by taxi, you might want to visit the ethnographic museum of Carrapateira to learn more about the land and the people living in it. Dinner at the hotel

Day 8 End of the programme
Your journey comes to an end today after breakfast.
